On Hiring
Any effort put forth toward establishing company culture is only realized with the right team. As we’ve developed a better understanding of what type of environment we want to work in, we’ve learned what to look for in the employees we’re bringing into the mix. Unsurprisingly, we lead with the qualities that have bolstered our friendship and in turn our business. We vet for kindness during the hiring process and zero in on any signs of cattiness. As we’ve become more comfortable being in charge, we’ve gotten better at pinning down what our vibe is so that we can seek that in others.
This is something that Kim France and Andrea Linett navigated, too, as they established who they were and who they weren’t, what Lucky magazine was and what Lucky magazine wasn’t. It definitely wasn’t going to be one of those bitchy, stilettos-only fashion offices where people were hired for their pedigree, because that just wasn’t in their DNA. The content of the magazine was approachable—more like shopping tips from a best bud than mandates from some high-fashion priestess—and so the editors on the masthead had to be friendly as well. From the beginning, the two of them were aligned on what made someone a good fit as an employee, even if that was hard to articulate to an outsider. “We understood when someone had something to offer, and we understood when they didn’t,” Andrea explains. “Like, if you believed in an It bag, you were not going to work at Lucky,” Kim adds. The ultimate compliment from this duo post-job-interview? “Oh, she is one of us.” Their ability to tap into that mutual understanding of what made for the right fit helped them grow a team that they felt good about. And it’s one of their lasting legacies, to hear them tell it:
